Review 18th May 2003
Whether it is Michelin Star quality food
or alfresco dining that you are looking for, the best of both worlds is now available
at Thackeray's in Tunbridge Wells. The construction of a stylish canopy,
complete with its own heating system to take the chill out of the early summer
air, now lets diners at Thackeray's enjoy lunch or dinner on the terrace within
a walled Georgian garden. In keeping with the contemporary spirit of
Thackeray's, the garden has been given a modern design twist with a Japanese theme
complete with a water feature, sculpture and atmospheric lighting. The
new addition to the dining experience at Thackeray's is designed to complement
the elegant interiors of the main restaurant and private dining rooms, which have
proved a great success since opening in November 2001. The Grade-II
listed building was the former residence of William Makepeace Thackeray, the famous
author of Vanity Fair. The terrace, which officially opened for this
year's season at the start of the month, seats up to 30 guests serving a two or
three-course menu de jour at £11.50 and £12.50 respectively. Guests
can also order from the a la carte menu, while private parties can arrange their
menu with executive chef and co-proprietor Richard Phillips. Commenting
on the new addition to Thackeray's Mr Phillips said: "The terrace, which can be
hired for receptions or private parties, offers a menu which remains true to our
Michelin credentials and to our commitment to using the highest quality ingredients,
but in a less formal environment." Diners can get a feel for the experience
at Thackeray's by clicking on www.thackerays-restaurant.co.uk and can email their
reservations direct to the restaurant manager on reservations@thackerays-restaurant.co.uk.
